MacKenzie Phillips – One Snort at a Time

celeb: MacKenzie Phillips
occupation: TV Actress, most notably for One Day at a Time

Okay, an explanation is in order. Mackenzie Phillips looks dastardly in this pic but it was some time around her 800th arrest for cocaine possession. She actually cleaned up after this stage in her life. Anyhow look at her then pic. I can’t decide who is homelier, her or Tina Yothers. Tough call. Anyhoo. Mackenzie began her TV  career when she was 12, playing a forgettable role in American Graffitti, a blockbuster at the box office. She gained TV stardom in the 1970s, when she played the boy-crazy (slutty) teenager Julie Cooper on the television show One Day at a Time, co-starring alongside Valerie Bertinelli.  (See my blog Valerie Bertinelli – ) In fact looking back she probably seemed more homely than she was because Valerie Bertinelli was so cute.

Eventually Mackenzie was arrested for possession of cocaine. Julie’s biggest problem wasn’t boys. The producers ordered her to take a six-week break to to go into rehab. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. In 1980, she was fired from the show. Ouch. That was when Mackenzie’s show took a serious nosedive.   She managed guest appearances on TV shows including Beverly Hills 90210, Crossing Jordan, Guiding Light, Caroline in the City and The Outer Limit (tailor made). She snagged a Disney Channel series  (seriously…Disney…ouch) aptly named So Weird. That must have been painful to watch. Mackenzie sang songs written by producers. That must have been painful to hear. Alas, Mackenzie was back to her old tricks. In 2008, she was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and heroin. She discussed her evetnual recovery on that annoying squawking daytime series, The View. Eesh.

That’s where it gets tawdry.

In 2009, Mackenzie appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show stating she was 11 years old when her father injected her with cocaine. Well that explains a lot. At 19, “I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father…It became consensual.” Ewwwww. She later recanted, “there really is no such thing as consensual incest due to the power a parent has over a child.” She became pregnant and her father paid for her abortion, “I never let him touch me again.” Mackenzie’s half-sister said Mackenzie told her about the relationship when she was 13  but stated, “I’ve talked to everyone who was around during that time, I’ve asked the hard questions. I do not believe my sister.” Wonderful. Nothing like a little family support.

She’s still acting. She’s still coking too and that’s not a full redemption now is it?
Sorta. She’s had guest appearances in a lot of shows.
Comeback Grade:  O as in One day at a Time is probably how Mackenzie makes it through her life.

I watched the Berley Hills 90210 dvd set and knew it was Mckenzie Phillips for the intervention episode for Dylan, but could not find her credited for that small role. Why?
