Oi! You just know that any young actor who grows into a dead ringer for a younger, hotter Jack Nicholson is on his way to major super stardom. Still hot after all these years, babe. If anything he’s even better. Christian Slater was Gen X’s major sex symbol. He had that Jack drawl and sleepy-eyed look. Sigh. Talented, good-looking and muchos popular with men and women, all I can ask is what happened, Chris?
Christian arrived on the film screen with a small role in a remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice … good flick. So far so good. In 1985 he got the lead in The Legend of Billie Jean…another seriously good flick. On a roll, babe. His big cult fan base came from a role in The Heathers … a rockin’ flick among the younger set (which I guess was me back in the day). Good little 20-something flick. This guy can do no wrong. A decade later in 2007, Christian made news by admitting he is still in love with his Heathers co-star Winona Ryder. Aw, shucks. Christian soared through a variety of big budget flicks in the 1990s including Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles … a serious box office hit. The guy’s gold. In fact, he donated his entire paycheck to River Phoenix’s favourite charities after his buddy overdosed. Amazing.

In 1993 he tried his luck at romance in a very moving film called Untamed Heart with Marissa Tomei (who? yeah she’s another wash up still to be blogged). I still remember a powerful scene from the film which involved Marissa narrowly avoiding a rape thanks to Christian the Good (it would have been the other way around had it been me and Christian – there is no way he would have escaped – but I digress). Then silence. And more silence. OMG! Christian! Christian speak to me, my love! Where hast thou gone? For a long time I did not hear his name. I did not see that flawless face. It was as though Christian had never been enjoyed a stellar Hollywood career. I wept and wept. However…. since 2000 Christian has made some guest appearances on TV in such sitcoms as The West Wing (awesome show). He has done voice overs for The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (he will be forgiven that one strike) and various TV documentaries. Cool. And oh joy, oh bliss he has “signed on” to star in an action film called Soldiers of Fortune (is it just me or does that have a suspiciously familiar echo to it). Doesn’t he look and act just like Jack? OMG – I thought he was Jack in that scene.
That’s where it gets tawdry.
Oh Christian. I should have seen it coming. Behind most washed up careers are (ahem) “legal troubles“. In 1989 Christian was arrested and jailed for drunk driving and assault (probably the cop who busted him). In 1994 he was again arrested for trying to board a commercial plane bearing a gun. WTF?? I say give him the benefit of the doubt. He was simply prepared to take out any terrorists on board who were planning a hostage takeover. That’s that. In 1997 Christian was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend Michelle Jonas and the arresting police officer while under the influence of drugs and alcohol (he has a thing against cops I guess). For that little prank he spent 100 days in a rehab facility followed by 3 months in jail, followed by 3 months in a residential rehab facility. I must say, my hat’s off to the judge. Sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind, especially when a dude is beating on his lady. Not cool, Christian.
Christian appeared on a Nelson Mandela documentary about AIDS awareness. Nice. He works to support humanitarian work in South Africa (I wonder if those are his roots? Meh, I’m too lazy to check). In early May 2009, Slater visited wounded soldiers of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the USO. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ bout. He was once quoted as saying “Work is my hobby, staying sober is my job.” More power to you, Christian.

His newly slotted appearance in Soldiers of Fortune, and fatherhood to his two daughters with ex-wife Ryan Haddon place him firmly in the comeback category. And for god’s sake Christian, please come back.
Comeback Grade: I for I still love you Christian.
